Our exhibit grew from a relatively innocent question that cropped up during Nuit Blanche in 2008: if we placed our friend Dave out in the open amongst crowds of people, how many would take the time to say hello face to face? The idea for this came about because Dave spends a large portion of his time saying "Hey!" He seems to know at least someone everywhere he goes. But do they really know Dave? Very few of these people know many intimate details about Dave, making him the ultimate acquaintance. Our society has lost the idea of "the mingle". When we attend parties, we only talk to people we already know. We only accept Facebook friends who we have pre-existing relationships with. Dave is the "king of the mingle." He can strike up a conversation with anyone at any time. We would like to find out how many new friends Dave can make in a 12 hour span. The more people who participate, the better. Anyone who wishes to say hello to Dave may join him on the platform, thus taking real, physical steps to change the anonymous way of life made ubiquitous by our technological addiction. |
